QUERIES
John Self married Mary Westgate in Carleton Rode, Norfolk, England
in
1806. Their son John, born in 1808 and died about 1840, married Martha
Long in 1827. The line the goes to John, b. 1829; Edwin, b. 1857; and
Thomas
Edwin, born 1888. Cousin Gordon would like to find his ancestors in
Norfolk,
England before 1806. Although there are links to Wiltshire, this line
is
a different branch of Selfs. If anyone can supply information, please
contact
Webmaster.
Arthur Ernest Self left Norfolk, England and came to the USA. His
brother,
Alfred Brasnett Self, then followed his brother, met him briefly in
East
Hampton on Long Island, and remained in the USA at least from July 1890
to August 1891. He then returned home to England. Arthur Self may also
have gone back to England. He married Milly Torbell--on which continent
is still uncertain--and had children Muriel, Gladys, Ernest Arthur,
Phyllis,
and Jack. If anyone is familiar with these names or could suggest
sources
to further research these two brothers, please contact Webmaster.
Cousin Bob would like to contact any Self genealogist who has a
Norfolk,
England connection. His Great Grandfather, George Harvey, was married
first
to Elizabeth Self, b. 1851-1878 and had three children, Jane Elizabeth,
George Edward, and Mary Jane. George's sister, Charlotte, married
Joseph
Self, brother of Elizabeth (Self) Harvey. If you are connected to
this family or researching the Selfs in Norfolk, England, please
contact
Webmaster.
Looking for SELFE ancestry and
descendants--Sir William Lucius Selfe
(Knight), b. 1845, son of Henry James and Anna Maria (Spooner) Selfe of
Elmdon Rectory, Warwickshire, and his wife, Ellen (Bicknell) Selfe;
also
Sir Robert Carr Selfe (Knight), b. 1840, son of John Selfe of
Stockwell,
and his wife Rosetta (Priest) Selfe. Please contact Webmaster.
UPDATE: Henry James Selfe was in fact the son of Rev. Henry Page
and Sarah Ann née Selfe. It is said that he received an
inheritance requiring him to change his name, but it may be that he was
estranged from his father who appears to have been neglectful of his
mother. So Henry James Selfe was born H J S PAGE, and when he
took the SELFE surname, he still had his 3rd Christian name, so was H J
S SELFE.
Cousin Jenny is looking for
information on the family of Charles

1871. Their children included: Emma Louise (b. 1862 in Middleton,
England);

Saxmundham,
England); Stephen George (b. 1867 in East Dereham, Norfolk, England and
married to Catherine Yull in 1898 in East Dereham); Kate/Sarah K. (b.
1871
in Ipswich); Edwin Charles (b. 1874 in Ipswich); and Albert James (b.
1878
in Ipswich and married to Margaret William in 1901 in West Derbyshire).
Some members of this Self family stayed in England, and some
emigrated
to Connecticut, USA. Please contact Webmaster.

Cousin Martin would dearly like to trace connections to the
following;
Morris Thomas SELF born 20 January 1840 in Yoxford, Suffolk, Eng. In
the
1881 census he was in Hove, Sussex. His father was William SELF born
c.1814
in Wickham Market, Suffolk. William's father was Samuel SELF who
married
Sarah MORRIS(born Thetford, Norfolk). Samuel lived at 13 Middle Street,
Wickham Market aged 72 in the 1851 census. Has anyone seen them
anywhere
or holding information on them? Please contact Webmaster.
Cousin Ellen writes: I'm hoping that someone on your list might be
able
to help me trace a SELF relative in Suffolk, England. NAME of the SELF
Relative: Wallis William SELF. COUNTY/PARISH: According to 1871 &
1881
census, Wallis was born in Palgrave, Suffolk. He is listed in the
census
of 1871 and 1881 as a nephew of my great-grandfather, Benjamin CLARKE
of
Palgrave. DATE OF BIRTH/MARRIAGE/DEATH: The census records indicate
that
Wallis would have been born around 1862. However, I have not been able
to find his birth in the index of civil registrations. Wallis married
Florence
COBB in Palgrave in 1882. His marriage certificate states that his
father's
name was Wallis RASBINE. (Was he perhaps born out of wedlock to a woman
whose surname was SELF?). At the time of the 1891 census, Wallis and
his
wife Florence were living in Palgrave, and had a daughter Florence.
Wallis
died in Palgrave at the age of 42 in 1904. That is literally all I know
about Wallis William SELF. MY QUESTION: Although Wallis William SELF is
listed as a nephew of my great-grandfather, I was not aware of any
other
SELFs in the family until I found Wallis. I have little information
about
my great-grandparents and thought tracing Wallis might lead me to
another
line of the family. Any information about Wallis and/or his family
would
be greatly appreciated. Please contact Webmaster
and Cousin Ellen.
Cousin Tammy would like more information on the following entry from
the London Examiner, dated March 13th 1808, page 176. It says Marriage:

that
links to the Selfs in the United States as well? Please contact Webmaster.
Looking for any information on Mary Ann Self who married John
Chapman,
1874, in Norwich, Norfolk, U.K. Have no info on Mary Ann's parents or

in Yarmouth, Norfolk. Please contact Webmaster

in London, England around 1885 +/-10. She married a Thomas WOODLEY who

1960's.

Cousin Jenny writes: I am researching Thomas Self(e) who was a
butcher
and was born in Bradford on Avon in Wiltshire. According to the family
bible he was born 5th November 1798. He was transported to Tasmania as
a convict on 9th March 1822 for stealing a pair of boots and spurs. I
have
found 3 candidates for his parents in the Wiltshire baptism records,
but
none of the dates fit very well. The first is James and Elizabeth
Dawkins,
the 2nd John and another Elizabeth and the 3rd William and Betty. It
seems
he left behind a daughter called Eliza, and married twice in Australia
(both times to convict women). The first wife was Mary MacDonald and
the
2nd to Mrs Elizabeth Capel (formerly Beardshawe or Beecher). I am
descended
from the second wife. If I can get in touch with anyone who may be
related,
I would be thrilled. Please contact Cousin
Jenny and cc Webmaster.

Yorkshire

their
son, WILLIAM SELF CUTLER married MARY BEZER, 27 Dec 1838 in Warminster,
Wiltshire (per GRO certificate). There is also an IGI for this marriage
showing same location in Yorkshire. I am hoping to find parents and/or

From Cousin Martyn: "I have a connection by marriage to Virtue GINBEY
(born Virtue SELF), who died in Columbus, Ohio in 1896. Her husband was
William Edward Ginbey, who was born in England in January 1809.
He was my great x3 grandfather - I am descended from Georgeanna Ginbey,
a daughter from his first marriage to Dorothy BULL.
"After Dorothy died, William Edward Ginbey married Virtue Self in 1851.
They had children Matilda Self Ginbey, Thomas Robert Self Ginbey,
Edward Self Ginbey and Emma Self Ginbey in England and then emigrated
on board the "Universe" from Liverpool, arriving at the port of New
York on 24 March 1859. Their destination was Herkimer county, where
William Edward's father James S. Ginbey had settled several years
earlier. They had further children Elizabeth Ginbey, William Ginbey and
Robert Ginbey in America. They later moved to Ohio, where William
Edward pre-deceased Virtue, in 1884.
"Julie Walton and Jill Poloni have worked with me on this research, and
between us we might be able to answer questions about Virtue or her
husband. So these will be most welcome." Please contact
Webmaster.
"We would also be very interested to hear from anyone who has
connections with Virtue or knows anything about her family. The record
of her death gives her date of birth as 3 February 1834 and we assume
this was in Norwich. Her parents were Thomas Self, a carpenter, and
Matilda Lancaster. She had brothers Robert Self
(who with Georgeanna witnessed a marriage in 1853) and Thomas Self (who
emigrated on the same ship as she did), so perhaps someone reading this
knows of them."

Bentley is head of family in West Ham,Essex, his wife is Annie, aged 26,
and says she was born in Westminster. They have a son Lewis Bentley
aged 10.However,when Lewis married in 1889 he used the surname Self.I

Cousin Andrea writes: "
am looking for any information on the family of Sarah SELF, born
September 1881, in Scrattage, Middlesex. She was born to Robert
SELF and Emily HARRIS. Her siblings as far as I know from both
the 1881 census and 1891 census are: William, Henry, Beatrice,
Edith and George. Sarah(Sally) immigrated to Toronto, Canada in
1913, with her husband Thomas WOODLEY, and their three children.
She was apparently disowned by her family at this point - I understand
Thomas Woodley was a gardener at her parent's estate. Do you know
anything about her parents and grandparents? I am her
great-grandaughter.
