Cousin Donald would like to find Elizabeth Self, wife of John James
Smith. Elizabeth (Self) Smith was probably born--date unknown--in
Charlotte,
Mecklenburg County, NC and died about 1816 in Montgomery County, TN.
John
James Smith was born in Ireland on Aug. 16, 1765. The couple married in
1975 and then moved to Montgomery County, TN about 1805. Only one child
is known--Thomas Self Smith, born 1809 in Montgomery County, TN. John
James
Smith moved to Humphreys County, TN after the death of his wife. Please
contact Webmaster.

Cousin Beverly writes: John Self was married to a woman named Anna
with a last name possibly being Jones. John and Anna are my Great Great
Grandfather. As far as I know from family he was born in Indiana in
July
1869. Anna was also born in Indiana in July 1875. I do not know how
many
kids they have other than my Great Grandmother and her name was Ida
Virginia
( sometimes people say it is May) Self. She was born in Indiana in
October
1893. She married Henry (Clay or Clayton) Briley Milliman. John Self is
buried in Smithville Cemetery [in Illinois] along with his daughter Ida
and her husband Henry and my Grandfather Dale Milliman and his younger
brother John. The reason John is buried here is because he was up here
on a visit and passed away and I don't think the family had the funds
to
have him shipped back to Indiana. However I believe that Anna is buried
there. Please contact Webmaster.

(Aug. 6, 1880 - Mar. 29, 1977). His parents are given as Samuel and

named Isabella Hicks--at least not in our records. Born in Missouri,
Jesse

Cousin Morris writes: "Information recently sent me by Ernest
Self indicates that Willis Self and his wife Rhoda had three children -
Locky W., Nancy and Jackson. All three were born between 1790 and 1812
approximately. We know they were under 16 at the time Willis was killed
in the Creek Indian Wars (one document indicates the children were
under
14 years of age). We know that Willis Self served in Harris' 1st
Regiment
of Georgia Detached Militia. His rank was private and he was under the
command of Joseph T. Cunningham. According to an affidavit signed by
Joseph
Cunningham Willis was killed in 1813 or 1814 at Fort Laurence (I cannot
find any Creek Indian War battles that mention said fort but perhaps it
was known by another name). I am curious about the relationship between
Willis Self and Locky (Lackey) William Self who was the patriarch of
Pike
County Arkansas Selfs. Does anybody have any information on Willis, his
wife or his children? " Please contact Webmaster.

Friend Sharron writes: "I am looking for Joseph Self who lived
in Louisiana near Alexandria in the 1980-1990’s. I would say that he
was
born around 1970 to 1074. His mother’s name is Catherine and he has a
younger
sister that would have been born around 1983 – 1985. We met in the
World
Wide Church of God (he’d know what I am talking about). We were great
friends,
but I moved from the area in 1992 and we lost touch. I would really
love
to find him again. I am trying to find several childhood friends."

FEBRUARY 15, 2003
Cousin Michal is looking for Rachel Self, her great-grandmother,
who
supposedly married a man named Lunsford, then married her
great-grandfather,
Robert Franklin McAbee, in abt 1887/88 in Marmaduke Arkansas. She was
born
in Dec 1859, according to the 1900 census for Blue Cane Township, Clay
County Arkansas, although in the 1910 census for Hurricane Township,
Greene
County, Arkansas, her age as listed gives a birth year of 1868. Her
name
is listed as Rhee in 1910, and her parents' birthplaces aren't listed.
Her birthplace is listed as Arkansas in both the 1900 and 1910
censuses,
and her parents are listed as being born in Tennessee in the 1900
census.
Rachel had a nephew Perry and possibly Rachel's brother was also Perry
- although oral tradition isn't consistent on the brother's name. She
also
had at least two sisters according to tradition, one married a man
named
Langley and had a daughter Sarah who married a Tom Simpson. A Sarah
Langley
who matches the birthdate of Tom Simpson's wife Sarah is living in Oak
Bluff in 1880, with her mother Mary Langley, a widow, born 1845.
Another
Self sister supposedly married a Glasgow, their son William Thurston
Glasgow
is listed as living with my great-grandparents in 1900 and 1910. Rachel
died between 1910 and 1920. Rachel Self and Robert McAbee had two
children
that survived to adulthood, Tidy Mae and my grandfather Jesse McAbee.
Please
contact Webmaster.

Cousin Tom is descended from John Jones Stargel of Union County,
GA.
His daughter, Louisa, married Elijah Self, son of Job Self. We have
Louisa's
mother listed as Jane Ann Defore. On our Union County, GAGenWebSite, we
inherited a list of marriages. One entry shows John J. Stregel m. Jan.
24, 1836 to Jane Ann Loper. We believe that this entry is wrong and
that
it is actually describing Cousin Tom's 4th ggrandparents. Does anyone
have
an answer to this mystery? Please contact Webmaster.
FEBRUARY 22, 2003
Cousin Barbara is looking for the ancestry of Lois Self. She may

Cousin Mildred is looking for information on Samuel B. Self. He
married
Mary Turner on April 24 1886 in DeKalb in Tenneesse. The family moved

Parrish Self, grandson of Abner, and ggrandson of Bradley. We'd like
confirmation
of this. Many of Abner's descendants moved to the Denton/Collin area of
Texas. Please contact Webmaster.

was
divorced and using the surname Rodgers. So, any of you Self out there,

JUNE 21, 2003
Cousin Johnnie writes: "Here's a Self Story told to me by my old
daddy, John David Fletcher I, b. in the Creek Nation, Indian Territory
a hundred years ago this coming 3 October. His mother was Amanda
Goodman,
daughter of David Goodman born in Mississippi in 1844, removed to St.
Helena
Parish and thence to Sabine Parish after the War Between the States.
Incidently
he served in the WBS Co. I, St Helena's Rifles, 4th Regiment Louisiana
Infantry with Privates W.D. Selph, wounded 30 June 1864 and again on 3l
August and with W.B. Self who was captured on 31 August. Amanda's
mother
was Nancy Elizabeth Cook, born 2 December 1858 in Sabine Parish. Her
parents
were Henry and Martha Cook. Nancy had a brother, John Cook who married
a woman my daddy called, "Addie" Self. They married in Many.
David Goodman's first wife was Mary Knippers who died young. About a
year
after her death he married Nancy Cook. They too married in Many.
Shortly
thereafter David and Nancy and John and Addie removed to the Choctaw
Nation
in the Indian Territory. Across the Canadian River where they lived was
the Creek Nation. Now to the story: In the 1890's in the Creek town of
Checotah Addie Self either killed or wounded an Indian with a chopping
axe. The Creeks didn't imprison or execute women, particularly White
women
hence her punishment was exile from the Indian Territory. Daddy told me
he thought they returned to Louisiana but nobody ever told him of their
fate. Does anyone know anything about this incident?" Please contact
Webmaster.
NOTE: We have tentatively identified the Selfs mentioned in Cousin
Johnnie's
story. They appear to be from the Baxter/John line--the two brothers
who
were married to Creek descendants (Derrisaw surname) and were greatly
involved
in the history of the Creek Indians. Many members of this family were
admitted
to Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) and given grants of land there in
the
late 19th century. We believe that "Addie" Self is actually Abzidie
(Self) Cook who m. J. Henry Cook [John Cook] in 1884 in Sabine Parish,
LA. She was the daughter of Alexander Marion Self and granddaughter of
John Self. Two of her 3 siblings were also married to Cook individuals.
The Cooks had 10 children, but we know nothing more about them or what
happened to them. W.D. Self seems to be Alexander Marion Self's
brother,
William D. Self. W.B. Self may be William Baxter Self. Both would be
around
the right age. Can anyone confirm this deduction? Please contact Webmaster.

Cousin Fabrice writes: "I have been searching for my biological
father for years now... I was born in France on July 16 1958, in the
city

is my father's name Raymond Self...the fact that he was stationed in
France
at the time (air force, I presume) he left when I was 2 years old
(1960)
and went back to the States, I know he was previously married and had
other
children from an American spouse...he was in his early forties when I
was
born... He was from Texas, of that I am sure. Please contact Webmaster.

Their son: John Henry Davison b. 24 July 1932 Dayton, Montgomery Co.,

Here are notes from a possible descendant:
Nathanial Self, Jr. born in Fayette County, Kentucky 1878. He
married Emma Lee Hall on July 21, 1897 in Fayette County. Family is on
the 1910 Fayette County, Kentucky census oldest daughter, Mattie F.
Self, age 11. Nathanial, Jr. was the son of Nathanial Self and
Margaret Privett.
I'm specifically interested in the DAVISON/DAVIDSON
connection...however I'm unable to find anyone down that line now so
I'm trying to research the maternal line until I do. Please
contact Webmaster.

Cousin Debbe writes: "I have reached several "dead ends" on my William
Isaac Self Jr. (b 1797 GA, d 1846 LA) research and I'm wondering if
anyone can help me.
<>I've been trying to find out where William Jr is buried and I'm
not
having any luck. Census records indicate he was back and forth
between Louisiana & Mississippi around the time of his death.
I am fairly certain he died in Louisiana as there was a "reward" issued
by the Louisiana Legislature for the arrest of his
murderer. I can't find him on any of the cemetery listings in St.
Helena or Washington Parishes in Louisiana or in Pike Co, MS. So
where is he buried? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
I'm trying to find out about William Jr's first wife, Virginia
Jane
Walker. I can't find any information about her (parents, where
she's buried, etc.) or any "proof" that she and William were
married. Any help on this?
My third "dead end" concerns William's youngest son, Thomas
Jefferson Self (b ca 1843). What happened to him? His
mother (Elizabeth Sandifer) was supposedly William's second wife and
she probably died before 1845 as he married his third wife ca
1846. I have been unable to locate Thomas Jefferson on any census
from 1850 on. I did find a Thomas Jefferson Sandifer in Pike
County, but all the data I've seen on him show his birth as 1847.
Does anyone have any ideas where else I might look?

Cousin Eddie writes: "My grandfather, Edward Luther Self, was married
to Eva Floyd who died when my Dad was 6 or 7 yrs old. Dad mentioned
some of the Floyds moving west, possibly kin to gangster Pretty Boy.
Seems like Grandpa had a brother named Dock. He was a cripple. Someone
in Gadsden put a knee in his back playing and put him in a wheelchair
for the rest of his life. My father, William Edward Self, was born in
Rome, GA in 1919 and moved to Gadsden, AL when he was very young.
He retired from the IRS in 1975. I think he had cousins in
Gadsden, but I was so young I can't
remember if I ever met them. My dad had one sister, Lilly Bell
Poore. My granddad lived with Lilly Bell in Gadsden until he
died. They lived on top of a hill with an old water tank in the
back yard--Bomar Street I think. My dad died in 2000 at 83 yrs
old. I am William Edward Self Jr., 58 yrs old, only child. Please

Cousin Jerry writes: "William
Anderson Self fought in the
Confederate Army, Co. I - 43rd Alabama Infantry, and was discharged in
June of
1865. William Anderson Self and his wife, Arinda Stacey Self, came to
Stringtown, Indian Territory about 1883. They had left Lamar County,
Alabama
(about 1881) then homesteaded a farm in Polk County, Arkansas(about
1882). On
their way to Texas to visit some of William Self’s family they stopped
in
Stringtown. A sulphur spring located in the area seemed to be
beneficial to
their daughter, Lou and they settled down and raised their family. After reaching Stringtown, Arinda Self kept a
boarding house named Content Collage. William and
his sons cut ties for the Missouri Kansas Texas Railroad (KATY) that
came
through the Indian Territory in the 1870’s. Does anyone know who
William Anderson Self's parents were?" Please

him: on 18 Oct 1865, in Craig Co., VA, he married Mary Jane
Elmore, daughter of Andrew and Elizabeth. The marriage record
gives his residence as St. Mary's Co., MD and his occupation as "Union
soldier." There is also the record of the birth of a daughter to

My research into the US Census found my ancestors Compton Sewell
Self and Elizabeth (Betty) Courtney living in Westmorland Co. in
1880. They moved to Alexandria VA and are found in the 1900
Census there. The 1900 Census listed Compton's birthday in
Dec. of 1849. Also in the 1990 census I see Fanny, who is Fannie
Griffith Self, my Great Grandmother. Fannie married Tony Walter
Essig and they had 3 children, Charlotte (my Grandmother), Compton M.,

Douglas Smith. William
MILLER was born in Georgia on May 23, 1824. It has been very difficult
to fiqure out who his parents were. There was a Zealot Miller living in
Lumpkin Co., Ga., in 1834 whose occupation was a miner. He was old
enough to be William's father, perhaps he was. They were both living in
the Frogtown district in 1850. I have not been able to connect them
together yet. William married Catherine Amy WATTS (dau. of
Garrett
Watts?) on June 10, 1845 in Lumpkin Co. She was born in 1828 in N.C.
They had 16 children. Catherine died on July 7, 1888. William next
married Mary "Dad" SELF. She was born in 1865. They had 4 children: (1)
Peter, he married Nellie Jarrard, (2) Paul (3) William, he married Ruth
Dover (4) Tom. It has puzzled many of the descendants why
Williams´s
second wife went by the name of Mary "Dad". If anyone has any
information or additions or corrections, please feel free to contact me.
William was a captain in the Civil War. He was in the 1116th Georgia
Militia District. He died on Feb. 17, 1907 and is buried beside
