Thomas GILCREASE was the son of Mary Elizabeth Vowell [who were his brothers and sisters?], and his self line was through his grandmother, Martha Ann Self (daughter of Samuel C. and granddaughter of John, who was probably the brother of Baxter Self) Born 1890 in LA and died 1962 in OK., Thomas Gilcrease was in Eufaula, OK before 1912. UNSOLVED MYSTERY

Cousin Candace would like to find out what happened to her great-uncle, Allie Milburn Self. He was born on 26 Sep., 1904, son of Silas Milburn and Dora Candace (Potter) Self. You can see this family in our Oklahoma Soundex for 1920 (link from our main page)--it derives from the line of Kentucky Selfs. Allie had an argument with his father in the early 1920s and left his family. He did not return to OK when his father died, but he did finally contact his family. He had served in the Marines and was living somewhere in CA with his wife, named Ruth or Ruby. In 1930, he returned to see his mother when she was dying in a hospital in Enid, OK., visiting with his 7 brothers and sisters for the first time in many years. During that time, he received a phone call from his wife in CA--a tuberculosis patient who was being put into a hospital. He boarded a train to return to CA but he never arrived there. His wife and family never heard from him again. He may have called his sister at one point, but if he did, he never spoke with her. He may have changed his name and started a new life or died enroute to CA. If anyone has information about Allie Milburn Self, please contact Webmaster.

Cousin Ben found his great, great grand father. He is David Self b. abt. 1792 in S. Carolina and d. abt. 1859 in Al., and he was the father to Chappel B. Self b. 1846 in Al. m. Amanda Cooper 1867 and d. Dec. 30, 1886 in. Al. I did this by tracing backwards with Chappel B. Self and it was hard to do because: Chappel B. Self can't be found in the 1870 census' anywhere so far, although he was first found in the 1880 Barbour Co. Al., census. Census searches for 1870 were made in Barbour, Pike, Henry, Bulloch and Dale County, Al. However he was found with his mother Mary in the 1860 Pike Co., Al. census where he was 14 yrs. old. (The father David died about 1859 so he was not listed) Chappel was also found in the 1850 Pike Co., Al. census with his mother Mary and his father David and was listed as 5 yrs. old in this census which jives with his age in the 1860 census but apparently the age in the 1880 census is a typo! (The 1880 typo caused this search to be harder than it should have.) His age in the 1850 and 1860 census' agree with his tombstone at the Methodist Church Cemetery, Louisville, Barbour Co., Al. This age also jives with his age on military induction papers in the early 1860's. Chappel's father David Self was found in the 1830 Crawford Co., Ga. census. About 1833 he migrates to Pike County, Al. In 1839 David buys bounty land from the U.S. Gov't. in township 11 - range 24 of Pike Co.,Al... David is listed in the 1840 Pike Co. census with a wife age 40-50 and four (4) children. His wife died apparently between 1840 and 1845, maybe in childbirth...? In 1845 in Pike Co. David married Mary Ludlum on Aug. 28th. This is in book 1-page 261 of the marriage records at the Pike County Probate Office. The 1850 census lists David - 58 b. Ga., Mary - 30 b. Ga., James M. - 21 b. Ga.., Thomas M. - 17 b. Ga., Mary 16 - b. Al., George - 12 b. Al., John - 10 b., Al., William - 8 b. Al., and Chapel age 5 and born in Al. Chappel was born after his father marries Mary, therefore he is a half brother to the other siblings. It is thought that David migrated originally from S. Carolina in the 1820's along with a brother to the Macon, Ga. area. David ends up in Crawford Co., Ga. The brother, at least we think he was a brother was named Chappel B. Self. Chappel B. Self is in th 1830 Twiggs Co., Ga., census. He is found in the 1840 Houston Co., Ga. census. A 1850 Mortality Report reports his death in March of 1850 which is several months before the 1850 census. The 1840 Houston Co., Ga. census lists Elizabeth Self - 48, Jefferson 28, David 14, Spencer 12, Lot, Columbus 8. Since this census was just a few months after the death of Chappel, we are pretty sure this was his surviving family. It looks like Chappel named one of his boys after his brother Davdid and it also looks like David names his youngest son after his brother Chappel. Also, all three counties in Ga. (Crawford, Twiggs and Houston) are real close to one another and all near Macon, Ga. Census reports indicate that both the Ga. Chappel B. Self and the Al. David were born in S. Carolina. I would appreciate any help in finding their ancestors. Please contact Webmaster.

Cousin Mary writes: I am the daughter of Melvin Self. My grandfather was Dave Franklin (or David Frank) or the variation thereof.. He was orphaned. His brother's name was Lonnie. Note: This is a "best evidence" line that Cousin Becky is trying to confirm. If anyone feels that this is anywhere near a correct estimate, we're very interested in this theory also. The Francis in this query is from our line. We are also fairly certain that at least Isaac is his brother because the same names were in his line. We have their father very tentatively as Job--and this name runs through our family, but this may not be correct. Please contact Webmaster.

Cousin Andy writes: "My ancestor Charles Blackard appears to be living adjacent to 3 Selfs in Bute/Warren County NC around 1757-1779. Perhaps Charles Blackard married a Self because he posted a marriage bond for Frances Self in Bute County, NC in 1778 who married Spencer Snow. Charles consistently appears in Bute Co tax lists and deeds adjacent to Job Self, Willoughby Self and William Self. Perhaps these are Phillip's sons. The men who appear to be Charles' sons are named Willoughby Blackard (b1758), Job Blackard (b.1766) and William Blackard (b.1760-1770). These appear to be Self family names. Job Blackard named a daughter Frances Snow Blackard, apparently after Frances Self Snow. I estimate that Charles Blackard married this Self woman about 1757. Does anyone have information on these Self-Blackard family ties in NC?" Please contact Webmaster.
